Walton Hall Hotel, Warwickshire

During the midst of chaos that was August, Alfie and I were invited to for a relaxing stay-cation at the gorgeous Walton Hall Hotel, In Warwickshire. Built in the 16th century this country mansion, is a now a grade II listed building. Full of its original character and charm it is now a hotel and spa, part of the Mercure Hotel Collection. It is the perfect retreat for you and your hound.

Driving up the scenic drive to Walton Hall, I just knew we were going to be in for a treat. Luscious fields, a huge lake and most of all dog owners playing with their dog where ever they want. As a dog owner there really couldn’t be a better first impression.

The Grounds

There was something so delightful about the grounds, as a dog owner you had the freedom to explore [off the lead] as you pleased. Which can be rare when staying somewhere like Walton Hall. At the time Alfie was still recovering from his operation, so our ability to explore was limited. We took a stroll along the green in front of the hall, trying to keep the water monster from having a swim!

We had been told about a lovely walk around the grounds, taking you through open fields and woodlands. This takes you around 40 minutes… If you fancy something a little more you can link with one of the public footpaths, surround the grounds and set off through the Warwickshire Countryside.

The Rooms

There are a number of different rooms available at a Walton Hall, luxury apartments, cosy rooms and elegant suites in the mansion. We were very lucky to be in a mansion suit for our stay… Alfie truly was the lord of the manor!

The rooms were large and luxurious, the interior still keeping with the historic feel of the building. With high ceilings and gorgeous large windows taking centre stage, it was like stepping back in time. The suits have a cosy lounge/dining area, large bathroom which is even kitted out with some spa products for you to try! Then the bedroom… The giant grand bed taking centre stage, one of those that you can easily let a little spaniel join you too – without four paws poking in your face! Haha!

For the Pooch

Walton Hall has always been a dog friendly establishment, but now 42 selected hotels in the Mercure allow dogs. Up until the 31st of October dogs are welcome to enjoy their “Happy Tails” menu. Which is a dog menu designed by pet nutritionist Katrin Scholz. There are delicious nutritionally balanced meals available, such as Salmon Sashimi and Beef Tartare.

As well as the Happy Tails menu there was a little welcome pack waiting for Alfie… A cosy bed [just in case you don’t have a bed hogging spaniel!] and some toys for them to enjoy! Alfie was very excited!

Dining at Walton Hall

By the evening James had joined us after work to share the experience! Of course just in time for dinner!! We took our seat in the dining room and ordered some drinks while looking at the menus. There was an evening a la carte menu but also a set 3 course meal menu with a few options. When we are out dining in style we always spoil ourselves with 3 courses. To start I had haloumi [or as I call it ‘squeaky cheese’] fritters, and James had a prawn cocktail. Both were very tasty and well presented.

We were having trouble on deciding on what to have for the main course, and then a burger was brought to the table next to us. Decision made! It was definitely a good call, but lets face it… Sometimes a burger is all you need!

There’s always room dessert! Again, choosing was hard. I eventually went for a summer berry Eton mess and James the creme brûlée… There seems to be a bit of a pattern with James and the brûlée! Both were delicious.

Breakfast time

For breakfast we had to sit in the bar area, which I always say is fine by me!! This was because the breakfast was a buffet. There was a wide selection of continental breakfast items, including my favourite pain au chocolat. James, of course, made good use of the full English breakfast buffet!

A huge thank you to the team at Walton Hall for giving us the most wonderful stay! Be sure to check out their limited edition “Happy Tails” menu.
