Dog Walking In The New Forest

Explore The New Forest

I have always wanted to get out and explore the New Forest. Luckily during our stay at Burley Manor James and I had saved a whole day to explore.

We had very little time and a lots of miles to cover so we planned a mini road trip, stopping off at some highly recommended spots taking photos along the way… Alfie loved it, you should have seen him when we arrived! He just sat there trembling, letting out the occasional excitable cry. I think we have all fallen in love with the New Forest.

Wilverley Plain

Just a short drive from Burley Manor is the beautiful Wilverley Plain, a large open grassy area. It attracts a large number of wild New Forest ponies. I had always wanted to see the New Forest ponies in the wild so this was the first stop on our list.

Alfie loves the horses, he kept looking at them wagging his tail then glancing back to me as if to say “look mum ponies” – He is so funny! I would also like to point out that Alfie has grown up around horses so has great “horse sense”. Horses are dangerous so keep your dogs under control around them at all times.

Wilverley Inclosure

If you don’t fancy a stroll across the plain you can head over to Wilverley Inclosure. A circular forest walk around two and a half miles long. Set in dense woodland there are plenty of opportunities for you to see deer and other wildlife.

Alf decided that this walk was the perfect time to fixate on a stick, happily carrying it around with him… He is easily pleased!

Whitefield Moor

Another large space of open moorland, and the perfect spot for us to stop off and play a game of fetch. Off course we had to whizz out a snazzy bandana – He is a super model after all!

Whitefield Moor has a number of footpaths, taking you across a whole selection of habitats. Perfect to take in all the sights of the New Forest. There are also some great barbecue spots too for those summer months.

Puttles Bridge

We just had to finish our tour with water… Surprisingly Alfie had managed to stay dry and reasonably clean all day. We stopped at Puttles Bridge, which can be walked in a 6 mile circular walk – But we just stopped for a splash!

Alfie loved to splash about in the ice-cold water! Much to the amusement of other walkers.

Are you thinking of taking a walk in the New Forest? We would love to see your photos or hear about your favourite walk.

Thank you Chloe! It took a while for him to get that sense – It took a near miss with my horses back feet to firmly cement it! Now he stays out of range at all time.

Love this! Looks like you had an amazing time, can’t wait to go back there this summer! Alfie is such a stunner. Ember has good horse sense too, as my sister has one, but it’s crazy how many people don’t have much control of their dogs around the wild ponies.

Thank you so much, we had a wonderful time! It’s madness how many people think it’s cute to watch the dogs try to chase them – They will learn the hard way sadly!
