Wales will forever hold such a special place in my heart. I have spent many a childhood holiday enjoying Wales’s rolling hills and beautiful coastline. A few weeks back we were invited to stay it the beautiful Brecon Retreat. Together with Steph, her husband Sam, and their good friends Tom & Sarah, we were all set in the perfect base to explore all that The Brecon Beacons has to offer. I was so excited to be going back to Wales, especially as I had heard the most amazing things about Brecon Retreat – the idea of spending a weekend in pure luxury was definitely needed. The Brecon Retreat is a small family run business, which started out as just a single self-built oak framed building, Swn Y Nant “Sound of the Stream”. A luxury lodge with such luxury charm, the perfect place for couples to relax, snuggle up by the fire and get as close to nature as possible. This summer came the arrival of their next property, Swn Yr Afon “Sound of the River”. New for summer 2016 this luxury self catering house is perfect for groups of friends or a big family holiday this spacious house can fit up to 8 people. The Brecon retreat is for everyone, being dog friendly, family friendly and eco-friendly.It is difficult to walk into the house and not completely fall in love with it. Swn Yr Afon is so spacious, yet so cosy at the same time… It is very rare that I find accommodation that just feels like home. It is beautifully decorated in cosy warm tones with little personal touches everywhere you look. The owner Helen was absolutely lovely, really going above and beyond to make us feel at home. She recommended a number of her favourite places to walk and eat, and even accepted a delivery for me before hand so I could shoot my Lookbook. She just oozed enthusiasm, keen to know our opinions so she could make any stay the best possible. She has also written a comprehensive guide of the area for you, with all the family friendly and dog friendly activities – So thoughtful!I loved the lounge, it was the perfect space to just sit back and relax and hang out with loved ones… And the very important social media catch up! There was two large sofas and the cutest snuggle sofa, with sofa protectors may I add! So your fury friends can join you on the sofa for those very important sofa cuddles.
Now, you are in tech galore in the lounge. There is a large flat screen HD TV with a whole array of sky channels and movies, and a house iPad mini with Spotify music and bluetooth surround sound. Everything you need for a cosy night in.The Brecon Retreat is definitely so much more than just dog friendly, being dog lovers they know just how much your dog means to you, so they have everything you could ever think of to settle your four-legged friend, making your stay as stress free as possible. There were so many little additions, my favourite was the welcome treat basket. The basket was full of all the essentials; Natural treats, poop bags, shampoo and even a personalised “Brecon Retreat” dog tag. The dog tag was such a great idea, especially if your dog is one to adventure a little too far! The tag has you accommodation address and a telephone number just in case. There was also luxury memory foam mattresses and dog towels waiting for us on arrival. Another handy thing was a dog first aid kit, something you never hope to need but always so thankful to have just in case.
So many people still think that staying in a dog friendly accommodation means that you have to sacrifice staying in a stylish luxury apartment so you can holiday with your best friend [I so disagree!] but that is definitely not the case at the Brecon Retreat. The kitchen/dining are just dreamy, it’s how I’d imagine that perfect family kitchen… The kind of kitchen you just want to sit down together, enjoy good food and spend that quality time together. We definitely made the most of the kitchen during our stay; we had some fabulous meals together. The hall way was actually one of my favourite rooms, with the cosy log burner in the centre of the house and a little reading nook I could spend hours snuggled up with Alf, just relaxing. I love a log burner, as does little Alfie. We don’t have one at home so when we get the chance to get cosy in front of the fire we always make the most of it. I love a board games! [although I am seriously competitive…so…I love board games as long as I am the winner! haha!]. Swn Yr Afon comes complete with its own little games room, filled with a whole selection of games and crafty bits. It is perfect for family time, or games night. We were spoilt with a choice of four bedrooms. Our bedroom was absolutely beautiful, decorated to the highest of standards… It was just dreamy. I loved the large white headboard, and the adorable cushions and throw. Everything tied together so well. The bed was sooo comfortable, with luxurious bedding and the softest of pillows you are sure to get a great nights sleep.I just have two words for you… HOT TUB. Oh my!! You cannot beat a nice glass of Prosecco and a soak after a long day walking the Brecon Beacons. As you can see Alf is quite a fan too! He likes to circle around the outside like a shark trying to catch any stray water splashes that might manage to escape. Such a strange animal! The garden is absolutely perfect, with ample space for playing and some seating areas for you relax on. I can just imagine spending a summer evening outside with your friends and family. And, for your four-legged friends, there is a little agility course. Great for you to learn the basics or you can set a more difficult course to practice your skills.
I was so surprised to see this on arrival, that as soon as we had unloaded our bags I was first out to have a play! Alfie only knows the very basics but we still had such fun popping around the course. If you follow the trail down the garden you will find the entertainment cabin – No, you did not just misread that, there is an entertainment cabin! I could not contain my excitement. You have your very own cinema room with 3D TV and a popcorn maker and retro games room you are all set for an evening of fun.
A huge “paws up” for the Brecon Retreat! There really was everything you could ever need to give you and your four-legged friend a great holiday. Our weekend flew by!
Thanks again to Helen for allowing us to spend a weekend at Swn Yr Afon. We had the best time! I have completely fallen in love with The Brecon Beacons, hoping to return for some more adventures very soon.
